This primitive fish from South America is a carnivorous surface feeder,
often leaping out of the water to catch insects, birds and other small
animals from overhanging branches. The Arowana is a "Mouth
brooder" species with the male Arowana incubating the fertilized eggs
in his mouth. This is a type of parental care also exhibited by other
fishes, such certain members of the cichlid family These fish are a
source of food for the people living on the Amazon River. Baby
arowanas, several inches long, are often seen in the tropical fish trade,
but this species is not suitable for most tropical fish hobbyists. This
fish can reach more than four feet in length, although three feet is
more common in captivity, and will quickly out grow most home
aquariums.
